About

"Second Chances"

The South Carolina "Second Chances" program has been organized to establish a race horse rehabilitation program in partnership with a South Carolina Department of Corrections. Through the "Second Chances" program, retired thoroughbred horses are cared for by prison inmates who gain marketable skills in the South Carolina horse industry. The S.C. Department of Corrections will provide a corrections officer, inmate labor and feed grown on the site to operate and sustain the stable and the 110 acres of pasture dedicated to the program. There will eventually be 50-60 retired race horses at Seabiscuit's Stable.

JOIN THE COMMITTEE TODAY!

The TRF Program at the Wateree River Correctional Institution is funded annually by contributions to the South Carolina TRF Committee. Your help is needed and appreciated.

The S.C. Committee Officers are:

Kip Elser President

Donna Freyer Vice President

John Rainey Treasurer

The committee is seeking contributions to support the annual operating costs associated with racehorse rehabilitation and vocational training for inmates. The estimated cost per thoroughbred in the program is $1200 per year. The goal is to retrain retired thoroughbreds for adoption as hunter/jumpers or pleasure riding. Horses that can not be made adoptable will be transferred to a TRF Retirement Farm and pastured for their remaining days. Contact the S.C. Committee through the National Steeplechase Museum in Camden, S.C. at 803-432-6513.
